LICENCE REQUIREMENTS
Here we have summarized the requirements for driving a snowmobile in Sweden, subject to changes in legislation. It is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of these requirements. In general, if you have the right to drive a snowmobile in your own country you also have this right in Sweden. Of course, your licence should be valid.
SWEDISH CITIZENS
Must be at least 16 years old and have any of the following:
• Licence for driving a snowmobile.
• Swedish licence for driving a car or tractor, issued for the first time* before 1 January 2000.
Anyone who lacks a licence for driving a snowmobile but has a licence for driving a car or tractor, issued for the first time from 1 January 2000 may only drive a snowmobile during a snowmobile safari**.
Those who have not yet turned 16 may drive a snowmobile during a snowmobile safari** if they have a Swedish licence of category AM (class 1 moped).
EEA CITIZENS (EU COUNTRIES + NORWAY, ICELAND AND LIECHTENSTEIN)
Must have any of the following:
• Swedish licence that meets the requirements for driving a snowmobile.
• The right to drive a snowmobile in their own country and be able to demonstrate this.
Anyone who does not have such a Swedish licence and who cannot show that they have the right to drive a snowmobile in their own country may only drive a snowmobile during a snowmobile safari**.
NON-EEA CITIZENS
Must have:
• Swedish licence that meets the requirements for driving a snowmobile.
Anyone who does not have such a Swedish licence may only drive a snowmobile during a snowmobile safari**.
* The date given in column 10 on the back of your licence. This also applies if your licence has been revoked for some period after 1 January 2000.
** Snowmobile safari is an activity within the tourist industry where a group of no more than 10 people is led by a person who has a licence for driving a snowmobile, along a route that has been set in advance by the leader.
These are the requirements for driving a snowmobile in Norway and Finland:
NORWAY
You need to be at least 16 years old and have any of the following:
• Licence of category S, issued from 1 July 2006.
If you are under the age of 18, you only get to drive snowmobiles of class 1 (a snowmobile where the ratio between engine power and weight is lower than 0.20 kW/kg).
• Licence of category A, A1, B, S, or T issued before 1 July 2006.
FINLAND
When driving in terrain, you need to be at least 15 years old.
When driving on official snowmobile trails, on roads, or when crossing a road, you need to have a licence of at least category T.
